Counter-Strike:Source is a game meant to take place in a 5 on 5 format. This is because the maps are designed for 5v5 play (as stated by Gooseman, creator of the original Counter-Strike mod based on the Half-Life engine). The terrorists and counter-terrorists face off using a variety of weapons up to and including pistols, sub machine guns, assault rifles, sniper rifles, a machine gun, and several grenades. Competetive gaming almost always takes place on de maps, short for demolition. Some of the more popular ones include de_dust2 and de_train. The terrorists attempt to plant the bomb at one of 2 bombsites, and the counter-terrorists attempt to stop them, or, barring that, defuse the bomb. Some gamers prefer the idea of hostage rescue, in which the Ts have taken 4 hostages and the CTs must retrieve them and bring them to a hostage rescue zone. Counter-Strike is also the most played first person shooter of all time.
